Pago Calzadilla

Calzadilla

Began in 1980 by the the Uribes-Madero family between the towns of Huete and Cuenca, south-east of Madrid.  Paco Uribes was an architect that had a vision, that eventually became Calzadilla. Wines are made with high expression from 49 acres of north facing, steep slopes. Calzadilla is one of 21 Pagos, and the only bodega within the DO Pago Calzadilla. A Monople, and the smallest DO in Spain by area. Organic and Vegan.

A dream that began in what seemed like an absurdity: a vineyard in the middle of nowhere. Surrounded by mountains, in the middle of  a hostile environment. They were called crazy.

They make the most of the environment, with the respect that the land deserves, they adapted the architecture of the winery, forming a unique symbiosis, both in its dimensions and in its external appearance. They cannot force the terroir to follow its own rhythms, so their production process must be exquisite.

Pago Calzadilla is located in the Río Mayor Valley, at an altitude of between 2,952' to 3,280' (900 to 1,000 m). The Valley’s microclimate, with frequent fogs and winds, protects the vineyard from dangerous spring frosts and brings freshness to summer nights.

Planting began in 1980 with 3 varieties: Tempranillo, Garnacha and Cabernet-Sauvignon. Later, in 1992, the Syrah variety was introduced, all cultivated on trellises, mainly on the slopes of Cerro La Pájara.

The fruit is pampered at every stage of the process: manual harvesting is carried out in boxes of 15 kg. Before fermentation, bunches are cooled and selected. grapes, musts and wines are moved by gravity without any pumping

The land on which Pago Calzadilla sits has not been exploited by modern agriculture.

This option is labour-intensive daily at Pago Calzadilla; fertilization with our own compost, pest and wildlife control are only part of the daily tasks that they must undertake without the “help” of chemistry.
