Cairats

Montsant

Whether traveling to Cairats via train or car, the small village of Darmós (population 98) is only about an hour and half from Barcelona. The village lies in the south east of the DO Montsant, which gained DO status in 2001. The town of Darmós is one of 16 villages in the DO that is separated into roughly the same amount of sub-zones. Within the circular map of DO Montsant lies DOQ Priorat, snugly surrounded by rolling vineyard-covered hills.

From 2000 until 2010, Ramon Masip and his family sought a way to recover the way of life their grandparents once had - being owners of a beautiful vineyard, making simple wines and selling them locally. He wanted to return to his family's ancestral roots. In 2010, Ramon found what he sought: old vines of native varietals along with a winery located in Darmós.

In 2010 Cairats began, with the purpose of careful production of quality wines which are authentic, honest and artisanal. The vineyards are structured in small plots with clay calcareous soils, on terraces with dry stone walls. They live their mantra of “Quality over Quantity” daily. All their wines are certified

organic and vegan.

The estate is comprised of two plots - Les Vinyetes and Pins Vens - totaling 27.7 acres of 45-65 year old vines. The land is planted with Grenache, Carignan (Samso), Grenache Blanc, and Tempranillo along with a few rows of Merlot and Viognier.

The bodega, built in 1900, is a testament to the past. The winery is small, cool and confined with individual rooms hosting French barrels and amphorae seemingly at every turn. Ramon decided to preserve all the original structural components without change.
