Canopy
Sierra de Gredos
Traveling south west of Madrid for about 45 minutes, near Toledo, you immediately notice the winding roads and the chain of mountains named the Sierra de Gredos. Canopy Enologists Alfonso Chacón and Belarmino Fernández began Canopy in 2003. Belén Hita was added in 2021.
The Sierra de Gredos terroir lies within three DO’s (Cebreros, Méntrida and Vinos de Madrid) with Canopy’s vineyards located in the Méntrida DO. Several plots near the mountain town of El Real de San Vicente, between the Tajo and Tiétar Valleys. Old vine Garnacha on granite soils produce sublime wines of elegance and finesse. They grow them without any kind of chemical or herbicide and are organic in production.
The grapes are crushed in small 1,500 liter vats to extract all the aromas and nuances in the gentlest way possible. French foudres of 2,000 liters and large French barrels of 500-700 liters are the main vessels for aging, so as to express the terroir as much as possible. Garnacha remains their absolute focus with small amounts of Syrah and a few white varietals.
Alfonso, Belarmino and Belén understand at their core, the value of biodiversity in maintaining an optimal ecosystem. Their approach allows the living soil to have natural predators while the vines remain perfectly safe against possible pests.
Canopy produces wines that are unique, because they take the utmost care of the vineyards and allow each plot to show their true personality. Each wine is one of a kind.
