Sangenis I Vaque
Priorat
In 1978, husband and wife team Pere Sangenís and Conxita Vaqué began to plant vines on their land within the boundaries of Porrera. Since 1700, these lands belonged to the maternal branch of the family-the Monlleó family- and were mainly used for vines.
In 1979, Pere and Conxita began making wine in the old cellar on Plaça Catalunya in Porrera owned by Josep Simó, grandfather of Conxita. Today, the wines are still made here. Current production is between 25,000 and 30,000 bottles annually.
The Family owns 37 acres (15ha), divided into 3 parcels that lie just outside of Porrera:
Coranya-Planted in 1978 with Grenache and Carignan. Llicorella (broken slate) mixed with river stone. Oriented to the north.
La Cometa-Planted in 1995 with Grenache, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. Grey and orange slate (Llicorella). Oriented to the south. There are 4.94 acres (2ha) more that have been recently planted with Grenache (red & white) and Carignan.
Roques Llises-Planted in the early 1970s with Grenache and Carignan. Crumbling slate (Llicorella). Oriented to the southwest.
The influence of the marine breeze (known as the Garbinada) reduces the heat in the summer so that the grapes can photosynthese effeciently. Maintaining the organic material in the soil is done naturally using manure
(from sheep) that contributes to the vines being able to avoid water stress in the summer as the ground is able to maintain humidity. They work all their vineyards organically.
For the aging of their wines they use barrels of 225L made from French Allier oak. These are joined by a very small percentage of American oak that have been made with the best wood selected and dried outdoors for 30 months.
Daughters, Maria and Núria are now sharing the wine making duties with their father Pere.
All Organic and Vegan.
