Luca Marenco
Barolo
For generations the Luca Marenco family has been located in the Novello borgata of Bergera-Pezzole near the commune of Barolo.
After viticultural and wine-making graduation at the Istituto Professionale Statale per l'Agricoltura "P. Barbero" in Grinzane Cavour in Piedmont, Luca spent some formative years between 2010-2015 working at Fratelli Serio & Battista Borgogno in Barolo. This is where Marco Bolla, the head at the vineyard, suggested that Luca start bottling his own fruit. So, in 2015, Luca bottled the Langhe Nascetta and La Volta Barolo from a nearby cantina (vineyard) with great results.
Luca inherited 10ha (24.7 acres) in 2018 between Barolo and Novello, and decided to build a spacious cantina above the Bergera-Pezzole plot. Between 2019-2022 (Luca and his wife Francesca) made investments in equipment and barrels which began the upward quality of Luca Marenco wines. In 2018 they released their debut vintage, the 2015 La Volta MGA Barolo, and in 2022 they released their 2020 Bergera-Pezzole MGA Barolo. The wine Luca is perhaps most attached to is Nas-cëtta del Comune di Novello. It is a white wine made from Nas-cëtta, a rare native grape closely tied to the village of Novello.
Luca grew up in an area where Nebbiolo is part of everyday life, not just a headline, and that upbringing shows in how he makes Barolo: with patience, respect, and a kind of quiet determination. In Luca’s words, Barolo shouldn’t be loud. It should be understood through time. Luca is in the vineyards and the cellar every day, and he is usually the one welcoming visitors.
Making wine means to create with passion. To value what you have, to be guided by tradition, and to never stop innovating with cutting-edge technology in the vineyards and in the cellar. He intends to make wine that respects the land by using renewable energy and, over time, to introduce newer technology that will allow him to manage the vineyards with minimal impact on the environment.
His approach is simple. He respects the character of each vineyard and each grape, and he makes wines that are honest about where they come from. They are rooted in tradition, open to new ideas, and meant to be shared.
No herbicides are used, although not certified organic, they abide by high environmental standards via SQNPI.
